The
state of Madhya Pradesh, which literally means
‘Central State’, lies at the geographic and cultural
center of India. Of all the varied attractions in
Madhya Pradesh, man-made or natural, the most famous
tourist hotspot is the Khajuraho temple complex,
built in the 11th century, with erotic
sculptures carved out on the exterior of the
structures. To top it off, the state holds the
annual Khajuraho dance festival, with performers
from all over India showing off their talent against
the backdrop of the temples.
Another notable heritage site in Madhya Pradesh is
the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi, dating back to the 3rd
century BC, commissioned by the Emperor Ashoka the
Great, who took to Buddhism after reflecting on the
horrors and suffering from the wars which he waged
on behalf of his empire. Also of interest are the
9000 year old Stone Age rock carvings at Bhimbetka.

In
addition to a rich cultural history with magnificent
architectural monuments, Madhya Pradesh also offers a
variety of delights to the outdoor tourist. With vast
plains, forests, wildlife parks, flora and fauna,
mountains, water falls and rushing rivers, Madhya Pradesh
is home to a melting pot of languages, arts and artifacts,
cuisines, languages, religions and traditions.
The Madhya Pradesh tourism department aggressively
promotes tourism and has designed customized packages to
cater to the individual likings and tastes of tourists. A
visit to the ancient temples, followed up with a
refreshing detour to one of the many waterfalls, ends up
in a dance festival late along with the locals late in the
evening. With the New Delhi and Mumbai international
airports in neighboring areas, Madhya Pradesh is one of
the first stops on a tourist exploration of the many
wonders of India. |

Due to its immense size, Madhya Pradesh was broken up in
the year 2000 by the Government of India into two states,
with Chhattisgarh as the new addition. Chhattisgarh eats
up a lot of the heavily forested areas and forts formerly
within Madhya Pradesh. For purposes of tourism, we assume
all locations combined in both states to be as one.
